So I have another security system that I absolutely love. But, I have a couple of extra places I wanted to monitor just as a precaution. I couldn’t really rationalize the purchase of new cameras in those places..not yet anyway. I just bought a new cell phone. And I’ve always wanted to try repurposing an old phone as a security camera. Thought I’d try it. This works incredibly well. Amazed at the video quality and the features, even on the free version...including 7 days of stored motion clips. Many/most other systems, when I previously researched and bought a WiFi system with fancier camera set-ups, require a subscription for that, as I recall. 7 days on the free Alfred, is the same as I got with the free service on the app for the cameras I bought. I upgraded there which came with 30 days of stored clips, just like this Alfred app offers. And Alfred’s premium service is only $2 or $3 per month (I believe) for almost everything I get with the other system. (I might be taking them up on that soon.) Actually, my other system has abit more lag (that I notice when watching live) than Alfred’s does. The lag on Alfred is very slight. I m really impressed. So this first experience has motivated me to go ahead and set up another camera on Alfred in the other place I’ve been wanting to monitor. I actually went online and bought a cheap used cell phone and a cheap little desktop tripod in order to do that. I also have a family member who recently has been going through a rough patch and has moved to the Chicago area (and had to downgrade into a smaller place). She can’t rationalize buying special cameras right now. But she does have a couple or three cell phones that she and her kids are no longer using. So next time I’m up there, I’m gonna set up some of those as cameras on Alfred so she can see how well this works. If she continues to find use for security cameras at all, I might buy her some of the fancier cameras that perhaps look better in her place. But, for now, I’m gonna probably be mounting her old phones to use with Alfred and try to make them look as inconspicuous as possible. I know she’ll feel better being able to monitor and know what’s going on at home while she’s away or asleep...especially checking in at home from work. And I’ll definitely feel better. Anyway, from a guy who has bought and uses other, dedicated cameras, this security-on-a-budget service offered by Alfred is great. I’ve only used the free version so far. And I totally see the value of upgrading to the premium plan. But the free plan works great. I am totally impressed with this app.

Kills battery constantly goes offline

Used an old 5s, worked great at first, for something unused otherwise at the house. Then it started going offline every few days so that made the program useless, because you want something you set and forget. You’d have to check it every few days and reinitiate the program on the camera device. Found a tutorial that showed how to lock the program which worked a little bit but you still have to update the program as new versions of iOS come out, and even then it would go offline but not as much. Last time I took it down from the mount the battery would die if. It plugged in, so now it’s destroyed the battery life. Useless app destroys battery life. Best to just get a camera system and avoid this.
