Needs Instructions on Controls Exclusive to This Edition – NonogramZ: 1000+ pic-a-pix & pictogram puzzles Review

I love a good Nonogram but...I don't understand the controls with NonogramZ. What are the stars for? What is the tan rectangle to the bottom right of the black pencil? What purpose does the ruler serve? Don't understand how to solve the color ones at all. Give control instructions and I will give you more stars.
