AOL is not what it used to be! Many users use this app because they have problems integrating with iOS mail. Using AOL with apple or other mail apps will start great, then within 24 hours, it will no longer sync. There is no real clue as to when it un-syncs, except when sending mail. So you probably won't realize your not getting your mail and then you will be asked to re-enter your password. Perhaps it will appear to work again, but it will only be temporary. AOL does not clearly explain the fix, they would rather you pay monthly for assistance or download their app. Fortunately, Apple now shows the type of data this program obtains.
