Why the need of a PIN? – USCCB (The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) Mobile Event Application Review

I was very excited when I found the USCCB app, thinking it would link me to the fabulous material on the web site. Boy, was I disappointed! Why is there a need for a PIN. Also, why only for Iphone, why not ipad, and public?
