Wasted Potential – Plants vs. Zombies™ Heroes Review

This game has lots of potential. It’s really fun, and probably my favorite game right now. The cards are very unique, and are a phenomenal inspiration for the card game I’m currently making with my friend. However, there’s some major problems. The biggest problem is the balancing, which is most grievous when it comes to zombies. Some zombies are just superbly powerful for their cost, and it kind of ruins the gameplay. The best example of this is the arm wrestling zombie; it costs 1 and is 2/2. That’s already pretty good, but then it has a phenomenal early-game ability to get +1/+1 whenever a plant enters its lane. I can’t think of a single one-cost plant with 3 attack. It’s ridiculous. Of course, you could take it out with a trick, but that’s only if you thought “I better have a trick specifically to counter this ridiculously strong card” while you got your 4 starting cards; and even then you could be unlucky and not draw a banana blaster or whatever it’s called. Another example of this is the telephone zombie. Yes, it’s a legendary, but all that means is that it encourages microtransactions, because the legendary cards are the only ones worth having, which makes facing off against someone with a bigger wallet just annoying. It’s not all on the zombie side of things, though; the garlic is a massive culprit too. It is 1/5 and only costs 1, which is already a red flag; it should be 1/3 at most! But then, you had to throw in team-up and a vampire destroying skill. It’s a joke. It’s basically as good as a wall-nut in terms of defense, and is way better in terms of offense and skills. If you’re not going to nerf its stats, you should at least make it cost 2 or more. Speaking of nerfing, there’s a huge problem there too. Half the time a “puzzle party” daily challenge is literally unbeatable because you’ve nerfed the zombie that stars in it and just haven’t bothered to change the daily challenge. Not being able to have a prize you’ve worked 7 days for because of no fault of your own is quite disheartening. I don’t mind the diamonds and microtransactions. It’s a free mobile game after all, and diamonds are surprisingly easy to get. The loot box system isn’t half bad either. The little comics and the whole theme of the game are really cute and fun, as well. But when you’re facing against someone who utterly destroys you, not because of skill, but because they had more money or free time, it’s really just sad and saps the fun out of it. Please nerf what needs to be nerfed and fix the puzzle parties. It would make the experience leagues more enjoyable.
