Need help – Chess By Post Review

I’ve been using this app for years now. But for whatever reason, the app doesn’t fetch data when I am not in the app. I never get notifications when someone I am playing makes a move. I have to open the app and let it get info and then loads any opponents moves. It also won’t refresh when I am in the app either. I have to close and reopen to see if anyone has gone. I have emailed them and they just refer me to outdated notifications settings from old iOS. Not sure if it is an app problem or an iPhone settings problem.
