An experience, not a game. – DIY Popcorn Review

I think some reviewers may have been expecting a game similar to some of the candy and dessert-making apps which have an arcade element and often high scores based on your baking or manufacturing performance. If you want that, there are some fun ones out there, but this probably won't be very exciting for you. This app is something different and you either get it or you don't. I personally have a soft spot for an emerging category of apps I would call comfort apps. Like comfort food, they remind you of your childhood, and this one does a pretty good job given that the most nostalgic element of popcorn for many people is the smell. Not possible on an iDevice, which initially made me wonder if there would be enough nostalgia in just shaking my iPad like a pan. For me, it really did take me back to my childhood. The popping time was faster than reality but the sounds are good, and the sliding of the kernels is impressively like the real thing. It even made my arm a bit tired, which felt genuine. Some steam building up on the inside of the lid would be nice. If you are one of those grownups like me who immediately did a search on "Magic 8 Ball" as soon as you got an iPad, you will probably enjoy this. If you never really liked the popping part of popcorn, this app will likely make you feel as impatient and frustrated as you did popping real corn, but without the rewarding popcorn smell and the ability to eat it. If you grew up with an air popper rather than popping the corn in a pan, you may miss out on some of the nostalgia, but might be worth a try.
