Par Excellence - Great Application – GPS Tracks Review

GPS Tracks is a first-class application. It is as near to an ideal tracking application as you can get. It’s interface and interaction to the Apple workout application is flawless. Not only does it accurately track from Apple Watch, you can view the full set of metrics - altitude, location at time, traversal speed &c. The capability of determining traversal distance via road and point to point over the landscape is greatly appreciated and useful for predicting both tracking and driving times. The point to point distance calculation is the workaround for the annoying bug noted below. Bug: the scale bar only displays Imperial units defeating the scale bar’s purpose. The scale bar which is optionally displayed on the map is supposed to provide a quick look to get an idea of how far apart various features are. Having no intuitive feel how far some fractional mileage is (Quickly, how far is 0.125 miles?) the scale bar has limited utility. The workaround is to do a distance calculation as noted above to discover that some point is 200m away or whatever. An excellent, but less capable competitive product, Guru Maps Pro consistently displays a proper scale bar. An alternative for small scale is to display the MGRS grid. The grid has a 10km spacing which is fine for small scales but not good for tracking. A suggestion for the developer may to be to allow the user to elect the grid density. When in the bush, a 100x100m grid would have utility. When in open terrain, 1000x1000m would be appropriate. (Most raster topographic maps do have the 1000x1000 MGRS overlay Which is another workaround.) As a result, I use GPS Tracks Pro and Guru Maps Pro lot as complementary applications! Watch out - not a fault of this application, or anything else, it is the way it is. When traveling in countries that do not use Latin scripting (Thailand, Myanmar) be sure to get as many way-points as possible before leaving, or install a custom map that displays locations in English, Spanish &c. Open Street Map (OSM) and others display in local scripting, as a result Thai and Burmese maps can be difficult to read! Keep up the good work, fix the scale bar and get 5 stars.
