Ground Control to Major Tom – Space Junk Review

These guys really got it right. The graphics, sound and gameplay transport you back to a day of pushing quarters into machines while giving it a modern fresh feel. This game hits it on all cylinders and I struggle to find fault with it. Graphics: The colorful vector graphics are reminiscent of Space Dual and Tempest shellacked with a delicious glowing candy coating. The lines are crisp and really pop on my iPad1. Our little spaceman hero navigates effortlessly across a sugary starfield with beautifully rendered backgrounds. Every detail down to the font choices and the strobing multicolor text all tip their hat to the 80's. Sound: This is really where this game pulls away from the pack. You can tell that great care was put into the sound design. Sound is equally as important as the visuals and these guys get that. Kudos. It's like Robotron, Defender and Astroids collided together and sung out in harmony. The sounds used to start each level and tally up the score at the end of each level are brilliant. The Gary Newman'esque title music leaves you wanting more as an underlying soundtrack to the game, but this doesn't happen. May I suggest a Space Junk soundtrack in the iTunes Music Store? Gameplay: Controls are smooth and more than adequate to perform the task at hand. The themes of each level and their names are brimming with creativity. Replay value is high as it never gets old blasting space junk. The multiple difficulty levels and gameplay achievements to unlock will keep most players busy for awhile. Support great game making and buy this title. For $.99, perhaps it should be called Space Robbery, because it's a steal!
