Surprisingly great – War of the Gods Review

If you like turn-based strategy games with an old-school feel, chances are you will like this game. If you prefer action-RPGs, look elsewhere. I play tons of iPhone games, most are a good quick distraction, but this one was good enough for me to play through it multiple times. Overall, it plays like an old-school side-scrolling Final Fantasy Tactics. I have some minor complaints: 1. I wish there were a way to select/deselect multiple characters at once. It is tedious if you want to select or unselect all the characters except for a few single units. 2. Another reviewer had it right that the game needs an additional lower difficulty level for anyone playing through it for the first time because some simple mistakes can end up being costly. Other than that, I think most of the complaints I just read from the other reviewers who liked this game were pretty weak, in particular, the review that complained about the choice of buying enemy units; After one playthrough it's simple to notice which enemy units you might want buy. Try going for the ones that can hit multiple enemies from 2 squares away. IMO one of the best units to get is the red mage(not sure if that's the official name) as she is the only unit in the game other than bosses with a range of 3 squares. Also, to the complaint about lack of animations, though the game only has attack animations(ie. the characters themselves don't animate), two of the best early RPGs, Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy V for the SNES used the same game mechanic and managed to still be fun. Overall, the fun here lies in the turn-based strategy of your offensive and defensive formations. If you want an action-RPG, I suggest something else like The Secret of Mana.
