A Disappointing Continuation of a Beloved Magazine – Dragon+ Magazine Review

As a long time fan of Dragon magazine (both in digital and print) I was excited to see what Wotc was doing to continue the heritage of this publication now with 5th edition well under way. I should note that I absolutely adore the rule set for 5th edition, the simplicity of the basics has been absolutely amazing for introducing many of my friends to the hobby, and has opened up plenty of room for homebrew at the table. All the more reason that I found Dragon+ to be such a great disappointment. I understand that there are limitations with a free magazine, but issues seem to be over half advertisements, the only usable content tends to be unearthed arcana which was printed elsewhere, and even that has slowed to a crawl in its release. Clearly their initial statement that they desired to continue providing “lore and gameplay materials” in much the same way as dragon magazine provided was not what I had assumed they meant. If you don’t like the wizards of the coast website, this app is an okay (if often buggy) way to get news, if you can use their website, this app is a waste of space on your phone. I’d much rather pay a subscription for better content, like back in the old days of Dragon. No offense is meant to any individuals who enjoy this magazine, everyone has different tastes, and I suppose I just miss what Dragon used to be. Consider this just a warning to other old grognards, I’d pass on this app for now.
