Spoiled food, bad customer service – Sunbasket Meal Delivery Review

I used Sun Basket a year or so ago and had good experiences but something has changed since then. At least half the ingredients in the last 2 boxes I have purchased from Sun Basket have been spoiled—rancid chicken (when I paid extra for organic), moldy tomatoes two boxes in a row, slimy spinach two times, slimes green needs, wilted cilantro, missing preserved lemons, diseased radishes. I would not feed this food to my dog. And when I have contacted customer service they have been incredibly stingy about compensation for the missing or spoiled items. I was not able to make one single meal of the 6 in the last two boxes without purchasing replacement ingredients, yet they would offer to give me like a $20 credit toward my next box (meaning I have to give them $60 in order to be refunded for something I paid for and didn’t receive!) or free shipping on my next box and I had to really escalate multiple levels up to get anything resembling fair compensation—the first of the two baskets in a row they did eventually refund me for and the second of the two spoiled baskets all I got was $20 back (eventually they agreed to refund the $20 instead of credit toward the next box at least), even though I got zero usable meals out of the kit and purchased way more than $20 of additional ingredients to try and salvage they ingredients that were edible. Sun Basket is more expensive than other meal delivery services I’ve used so I would expect better quality and better service but they basically just send compost. I have a strong stomach and will eat almost anything and I really did give them a try but I actually want to throw up when I think of the meals they have sent me. On top of all of that, one of the boxes I ordered said it had been delivered but never arrived. I sat around waiting for it to arrive with no other dinner plan and when I contacted customer service they said it would be delivered the next day. I asked if that meant the food would be a day less fresh and would have been sitting out an extra day and they basically confirmed this and refused to do anything about it. When it arrived the box was on its side even though it was clearly labeled “this side up”, the ice packs were no longer cold, and the food was spoiled. It took so much tooth pulling to get anything resembling a fair response from them for this. Try Blue Apron or Hello Fresh or Dinnerly or Every Plate instead.
