MCF: The Black Veil by LynxMinx – Mystery Case Files: Black Veil Review

I wanted to like this game, but I just didn’t! EIPIX gave us a lot of bells and whistles, but this game was too weird for me and I didn’t enjoy playing it! You could customize settings. They gave us an actual journal but the storyline was so convoluted and twisted that I missed the point. Objectives were regularly updated. I found that the graphics were extremely dark and not crisp enough, and it bothered my eyes trying to find the puzzle icons at each location. With the bonus adventure the game was a decent length. But I found it interminable because I didn’t love the gameplay. There was a marked teleport map but it was awful. Why couldn’t they give us their usual map with a question mark for objectives and an exclamation point for an active task? Inventory was labeled and there were complex items to assemble. The HO scenes had morphing objects, and I would have liked an alternative puzzle. Some of those scenes were brutal! There was a large selection of puzzles and mini-games, including myriad super-puzzles. I learned that playing so many games trains your brain. I didn’t like some of these puzzles and surprised myself by not skipping most of them. My brain took over and solved them for me, even when I wasn’t sure what I was actually doing! Gameplay was smooth for the most part. Occasionally I needed a hint when placing an inventory item. I have to rate based on an enjoyment factor and not only game features. I think the safest bet is to rate it at 3 stars, right down the middle. I deducted stars for the confusing storyline, the murky graphics, the ridiculous map and the fact that I wasn’t enjoying the game. Remember that gaming is subjective; just because I didn’t like this game doesn’t mean you won’t. Tiramisu and Dracyy rated this game very highly and I thought I would love it as well, but that wasn’t how it turned out. For those of you who are unaware that Artifex Mundi released a new game (Modern Tales: Age of Invention) I am letting you know. I loved it and gave it a very high rating! By the way, KimTwilight, the professor in that game is a hottie in case you decide to play! Happy gaming to everyone!
