Almost Great – Bacon Escape Review

I'll start off by saying that I generally hate infinite runner type games. Simply trying to beat your best score doesn't hold a lot of appeal for me. This game has "checkpoints" (levels), so it's not just a "mindless running until you die then start all over" game. The mechanics are creative and definitely challenges your reflexes. Rather than tapping to jump or move to avoid obstacles, you tap to change the course so your animal can make it through alive. The graphics are cute and music is fun. However, their reward system is where this game fails to make the jump from good to great. You have the ability to unlock characters and vehicles from chests either with coins collected during gameplay or by watching ad videos (seemingly unlimited - I watched 10 ads in a row and it still gave me the option to keep watching to unlock, which I didn't because I got bored). I hate to complain about easy rewards as most freemium games make things too difficult these days, but I found myself getting bored after a while because there isn't much reason to keep progressing through the levels, other than just playing harder levels. It would have been much more enticing if you were awarded a new character or vehicle after completing a level. Or if they gave the characters/vehicles special abilities, that would add another layer to the game. As it stands, I'm on level 20, unlocked most of the characters and vehicles simply by watching ad videos, and starting to feel pretty unmotivated to play. Will probably only stay on my phone for another day or so before it gets deleted to make way for something new.
