Good concept; too much effort for disappointing results – Oilist Review

I grabbed Oilist a while back when it was featured. The price tag was a little steep for another “turn your photos into paintings” app, but the screenshots seemed promising. An update or two later, I’m frankly disappointed in the app and the developers’ attitude toward improving the app: using it just isn’t enjoyable. The devs claim that they don’t want to just make a simple filter app, which I get, but the result is an app that takes too much time and effort to use. You’d think that the trade-off would be tools that give you a lot of control over the result, but I’m not even happy with what comes out half the time. I sit in front of my phone waiting for the app to hopefully “paint” over some white space, for example, and it never does—or by the time it does, it’s gone over the part I did like and made it look bad. I want my $4 back.
