Exceptionally polished and complete Python IDE – Pythonista 3 Review
This is an extremely well thought-out and constructed IDE for the Python language. It is genuinely a complete IDE - you get Python 2 and 3, you get an integrated REPL, a code editor, console, file manager, UI editor with highlighting, themes, and code completion, and a decent set of libraries.
You can use Python to create Today widgets. That's just cool! There are built-in UI libraries and game libraries, and a comprehensive set of examples for inspiration.
What really makes this a valuable tool for real work as opposed to merely a nice learning sandbox is the ability to install any module you like. Grab "StaSh" from GitHub and you'll have a built-in shell with the ability to use pip to install Python packages! It works just like it does on your actual computer.
Within minutes of installing Pythonista, I had one of my main scripts running. This downloads a bunch of JSON data from various REST endpoints, joins it all together, and writes out a nicely formatted Excel .XLSX file (using XlsxWriter). I ran it on the train on my commute and I had the Excel file loaded up in iPad Excel straight away! Everything I wanted to do, I could do.
This honestly is great. I want a Mac version now - so much simpler and easier to use than bloated old PyCharm; so much friendlier than using a text editor and figuring out the rest yourself... My iPad Pro finally feels like a real computer.
