Dishonest – Boom: Bass Booster & Equalizer Review

Like others have said, when you have the effects turned off, it degrades your music so you think it sounds better when you enable the effect. I played a song through the regular music app, and used that as my baseline. Then I played it through Boom, and the same track sounded weak and feckless with the effects turned off. Then I enabled the effects and just got a huge bass boost at the expense of all the other minor effects in the track. After playing the same song again in the regular music app, that was by far the cleanest version. In the app, there's actually an "intensity slider" that is by default in the middle of the slider. Turning it up made the bass louder and more boomy. Turning it down made it sound like it did with no effects on, worse than playing through the regular app. I'm using nice headphones in this test, too. Not over-the-top ones, but ATH-M50s, which are still very good. tl;dr this app sounds good against itself by lying about what your own tracks actually sound like, and enabling the effects is like an Instagram filter for music. It sounds *different*, I just wouldn't call it better.
