Can't buy stuff in the free version – Virtual Families Free for iPad Review

Are you supposed to be able to buy candy and home improvements in the free version? They keeps telling me that they want more stuff, but I can't buy anything. They keep making money, but all I can buy is food and medicine. It's kind of boring when you can't fix anything or buy home improvements.
