I travel to Japan every 3 months. I use this constantly when I encounter new words. Words also are used in example sentences which helps tremendously. The camera picture function has potential to be stellar, and the developer is working hard to make it better! They are responsive to feedback and ideas. Well worth the paid version!
At first it was somewhat useful but had too much trouble recognizing text. Today it is fast, good at recognizing text, and has a better dictionary and other tools. When the text can’t be recognized I use the Kanji drawing tool. It is effective and flexible — you don’t have to get stoke order right and you can be sloppy. The dictionaries keep improving and even include a name dictionary. It’s becoming an important part of my Japanese learning tools.
I use this to look up kanji I’m unfamiliar with when playing video games. It is insanely useful.
I love this dictionary, but the latest update as of July 10 has the handwriting input crashing the app every time I attempt to use it (iPhone 6S with iOS 11.4).
It does a great job of translating text, but it has a hard time with words that are considered slang.
I got this app in order to play through FF7 in Japanese and its camera works perfectly for it. There are occasions with other things where it won’t work, but writing out the kanji works just as good as long as you know strike order. The dictionary is fantastic and works both ways perfectly. They recently added all conjugations for verbs and it’s so helpful. This is a must have app for both students and tourists visiting japan.
I don’t even know what to say. This app is so much faster and compete than the already great Google Translate app. I don’t know how I ever lived without it! <3
Experience so far with Yomiwa has been great: Very affordable (for its capability) Love the camera feature Offline capability makes it very travel friendly Very happy with this app!
Printed kanji with serifs, printed kanji with thick lines, and vertically printed kanji consistently confuse Yomiwa in camera or photo reading mode, even with hi-res images. I end up not using the application in between updates as it doesn't perform as advertised. With each update I try again but so far these issues are still unresolved.
