Viking Chess!

Viking Chess! is a 3D multiplayer adaptation of the ancient Nordic game of Hnefatafl for iOS. The premise is simple: one player controls the King and his Defending pieces that start in the center of the board. The other player controls the Attacking pieces placed along the board's edge. The Defender must get his King to any of the four corners to win, while the Attacker must capture the King.

The asymmetrical nature of the game makes for an engaging match of strategy. In order to win, you must outthink and outmaneuver your opponent.

Play with your friends and random opponents using Game Center, or pass-and-play your iPhone or iPad to a friend for same-device couch play. See how you stack up against others on the Leaderboards, and unlock Achievements... then challenge your friends to do the same!

If you're new to "tafl" games, don't sweat it: Viking Chess! includes instructions on how to play along with intuitive controls.

Works fine but

Played for 2 minutes and my phone overheated. Ambient temperature is 68f, phone operated normally after exiting the app. Can’t risk bricking my phone.

It is insane! I less than two minutes, it killed 10 percent of my battery while it was charging! Don’t waste your time on this price of junk.

I have no problems using this app. I love the Viking culture and I have a board of Hnefatafl in real life. I haven't noticed any major bugs. I program for fun sometimes so I know this might take a little time but AI to play against would be great so I wouldn't need data or another person.

A true testament to Viking times, Viking Chess is beautiful, fun, and violently competitive. This game is fit for a King. Say good bye to the days of pillaging and plundering to save enough money for a game. This one is free. Now that's a steal.

Finally! A Viking chess app! This has to be one of my favorite board games of all time. My friends and I play this game all of the time. Do yourself a favor and buy this app!!

Really like the game, especially playing on one device with friends, or after I am done with Stealin. I would expect a little better tutorial (maybe it can detect that it is first run and suggest some tips) and option to play against AI but it is fun and you should give it a try.

Won't open on my iPhone 4

I really love the game itself, and I chose this particular designer's version because it didn't look like 'Othello' (simple b&w circles) on a checkerboard. The game stalls on opening then shuts off. Too bad. I guess I will be sticking to my physical Hnefatafl set that I picked up in Edinborough, Scotland back in '96, while on my honeymoon.
