Automatic fire allows you to focus on sliding your finger around the dial so that your ship will match the direction. If the shooting stops, it is a level where you must dodge the incoming objects.
Unusually for this type of game, you will continue on the next level with a new life. This avoids you getting stuck on one particular level that you have trouble with.
New restart levels are unlocked after every 20 levels until 200. This means you do not have to play again through levels you find easy, and get straight to where the challenge is fun. But there is an option on the settings screen to reduce the start level for when someone else plays the game (the option only appears once you have unlocked a level start beyond Level 1).
