Twinkl Spelling offers over 320 spelling tests and over 3000 unique words, all drawn from the contents of the DFES Phonics Program Letters & Sounds and/or the English National Curriculum.
These tests can be manually assigned as you wish, in adult led mode, or choose to logically progress through spelling levels in progressive mode. With up to 30 users per device, fully configurable with unique settings and avatars, the app can be set-up and used exactly as required by everyone in the family or classroom!
In addition to the standard test mode where users have to spell a given word correctly, the app features four practise mode games offering a variety of opportunities to learn before attempting a test:
In 'Mr Whoops' letter jumble - the user has to re-order the given letters to form the correct word.
In Whac-a-phant - the user has to press the correct letters in order, as they pop-up and appear.
A traditional Word search mode is offered, featuring only left to right spelling to ensure correct re-enforcement.
Finally, the Look, (Hear, Say), Cover, Write, Check game gives children digital access to practise using this popular technique.
Children's test achievements are celebrated through the collection of 'Spellephants' (34 in total) which are awarded based on achievement criteria visible to adults. Target tests, which contain words that a user has misspelt, are also collated by the app and are automagically added to a 'targets test' which can be used to help reinforce areas which users might benefit from more practise in.
Each spelling test, can conveniently be exported as a PDF, and statistics are available for each spelling test; showing words which the user spelt correctly and incorrectly (including the user's actual attempt).
As a Twinkl member or in-app subscriber you are able to create unlimited custom spelling tests which allow you to have even finer control over which words a user practises. Custom tests can be shared via QR code and even free Try! mode users can play your custom test at no cost - perhaps you'd like to re-enforce learning and provide a QR code for students to practise for free using the Twinkl Spelling app? Perhaps you'd like to set a challenge for a friend, or improve specific vocab? In any case, custom tests, with QR code sharing are a great option.
The app works fully offline and does not require you to sync/share data or expose a child user to any online features.
