Living in China now and I've been working through apps for 5 months. Some are good, some are terrible, but this is by far the best I've come across. From no fewer than 20 Chinese learning apps I've used I find this to be the most comprehensive, the most fluid, and best suited for a variety of learning styles. There are paid apps that are nowhere near this good.

Fantastic suite of Apps

LOVE this app - I make my own lists, and I use the website and the iphone app together. I never usually pay for apps, but this has been more than worth the price. I can enter characters using pinyin or hanzi (even handwritten).

I Never Write Reviews

This app is absolutely the greatest app out there for learning Chinese. I've been in China for two and a half years, and I've seen them all. Been using this app for three weeks now after buying a three month subscription, and I am absolutely overjoyed with my purchase. At first, I thought the price for subscriptions w high, and it was ridiculous that I had to purchase lists, but seriously, now, totally worth it. The devs always respond to my emails with criticisms, and they are constantly fixing the app if there are any issues. Some sentences don't have audio (about 10% maybe), but it's a mostly complete app with all the words you need. What I like most is its integration with other apps. I use the Chinese Writer and Audio Trainer. The Writer is a little meh, not so useful for my level (HSK 6), but the Audio Trainer is INCREDIBLE! So very, very useful. Also, everything synchs quite well across devices, which makes things very convenient. Only huge criticism I have is that on some devices (right now it's the iPhone, though I swear just a week ago it was the ipad) example sentences are missing. They show up on one device, but not on another. The devs said there was some bug that deletes one example sentence from certain devices. I find this annoying, since I have to go to Pleco to copy and paste example sentences into my TrainChinese notes, but other than this, I really have no criticisms of the app. Buy it, try it out. $50 for a year is far, far less than you would pay for Chinese course, and I swear, as someone who HAS taken a year of Chinese courses from the most prestigious school in China (Peiking University) and as a man with friends who have attended the Beijing Language Center University, I can without a doubt say that this app, and it's relatives, are far more effective for learning vocabulary, at least, than any of those schools. Your money will not be wasted!! 加油!!!

Bad Update

Angel DiMaria

Good app. But what happened to the similar characters function? Before updating, a character search would return two or three highly similar characters in the upper right corner. After updating its gone! I was really useful!

ADD Savior!

This app is a perfect supplement for any person who finds a classroom setting monotonous. I use this app in conjunction with the assignments given by the educator and create custom lists. My son has ADD and this app along with the Writer really keeps his interest and has vastly improved his grade in the classroom! Thank you!

Flexible well-designed and responsive

This program is excellent and deserves a review. This is the first program I found which allows you to focus on the aspects on vocabulary areas you care about. Very good for people who can speak but can't read and write well. The stroke guide is a very good function and the flash card system allows you to track progress and automatically sets timing for reinforcement lessons. Best part is that if you pay, you can put your own vocab in on their websites, and they input them into your cards fairly quickly.

Great for learning strokes. Hideous dictionary

janshums

Simple words such as 劝告 quan4gao4 (counsel) and 良心 liang2xin1 (conscience) bring up results of tons of random sentences that do not include those words. If they were to make the dictionary better it could replace Pleco.

Great set of Apps

I've used most of the larger apps and this one (and its cousins) is the best dictionary. Great pre-organized lists! Saves me lots of time. Has really helped me get motivated too.
