A language app that’s actually fun!
Lothcat

Bottom line: I’m hooked! This is actually making writing practice fun, and I’m amazed at how fast I’m learning. Pros: fun mini games, lots of things to do for free, questions increase and decrease in difficulty logically, buying content (coins for books) is really cheap compared to other language apps. Cons: the writing recognition is really finicky at times, there should be more user control over what’s added to the daily quest. So how this app works is that you have a little avatar who is facing off against monsters. The actual gameplay is very simple, kind of bejeweled-meets-Pokemon, you match colored circles to create elemental attacks that you use against elemental monsters, that then get to hit you. However, to use your attacks or to defend against the monsters, you have to answer a question correctly. I’m working on Hiragana and Katakana, so all of my ‘questions’ involve recognizing the symbol or writing it correctly. There’s a daily quest, and the quest has little sub goals (like make 12 attack chains, or use 3 critical attacks, which will make sense when you play). During your quest, you earn tokens to buy your character new hats, and tickets to use to try to unlock new worlds and monsters. The only thing I wish is that I had more control over the daily quest. You add more items by buying (or making) books, and I bought the Katakana book early. I wish I hadn’t, though, because the daily quest is now quizzing me on Katakana and I don’t feel like I’ve mastered Hiragana yet, so it’s confusing.

Fun, but...

...it costs you to make your own flash card deck? I started off buying a deck to figure out how the game worked, not realizing how hard it is to earn in game currency. For a language app I’d rather have ads. Maybe a weekly freebie deck would entice me to keep using the app.

Needs an update

During startup it says “ failed to reach server”

Nice idea, too expensive

This seems like a really cool idea but the way they have decided to monetise it is unreasonable. Basically you pay to make content then they make money off that content. No thanks!

Could be better

Effective but expensive. Oins are impossible to get enough of for an entire book. It'd be nice to earn oins with ads or something

Five stars but...

Ok so ive been learning languages for over half a decade. Ive trawled countless app stores and google searches and have pretty much seen it all. That being said study quest in comparison to pretty much all its competitors (language learning rpgs which are very few and far between) is miles ahead. Im legitimately addicted to this game. However there are a few gripes i have, i didnt take off stars for them because honestly its still better than alot of others. One thing i like is the coin system as it makes vocab into something valuable to earn. However the current generation options are indeed lacking, the daily check in bonus doesnt generate enough coins and i was disappointed with the fact that despite the fact that community generated vocab required coins no coins were given to the content makers. I wouldve atleast liked to get a cut maybe 25% or so? With a rating system to insure quality. I also wouldve liked more benefits to leveling up such as increased health, more skills or higher damage.
