If you don't have a membership there is nothing available for your children to work. Don't bother downloading.

I tried a few time to download this app on my son iPad but I will not download... and on the website we keep experiencing problems... not to happy with this app

The website continues to freeze. Restarting your device does not help. The app will not let you download it at all. My child has an account via the school but she can never use it at home.
