I like the idea of extra practice for bar modeling. However, there is the risk that the kiddo will spend so much time fiddling with all the bells and whistles (data labels, numbers, sizing the bars) that he/she will miss out on the big picture and, quite frankly, waste lots of time. I think I'd like this better if it just offered the kids the scratchpad space to draw the model, write the number sentence/equation and solve the problem but we'll see. I'll update this after DD gives it a test drive in a week or so. It is a nice looking app and seems to work well. I'm just not convinced that it's better than ye old paper and pencil. Any chance that this app might expand beyond bar models so the kids could take chapter pre-tests or quizzes on their own at home?
This is an okay app, but it needs a few more options to make it a great tool for practicing and teaching model drawing. 1. The app should allow the units in each bar to be individually labeled with a value. 2. It would be helpful if the writing tool used in the scratch pad was accessible and useable in the work area and not just on the scratch pad. They are both great tools, but not being able to use them together limits their functionality. 3. The color choices for the bars are dull; not vibrant or engaging. Takes the fun out of getting to choose your own colors. Until these things are improved, I consider this app to be mediocre. I figure you are just as we'll using pencil and paper so that your options aren't limited.
From a short time of usage, this seems to be a nice useful app for practicing word problems. Then we had to replace the old iPad and discovered that re-downloading the Singapore math grade 2 application which we purchased for about $11 doesn't bring up the full version and there is no way to restore it other than to fork out another $11 to repurchase again. We expected that once purchased, we can always restore what we have purchased, but it wasn't the case for this app :(. Very disappointed!!!
