Here is one of the first math apps to support the skills needed in pre-algebra/ algebra. This app builds the strategic skills that students need to develop in solving problems. By the way, it is great for adults who want to give their brain a workout in problem solving. You can not miss with this incredible math app!
Terrific Introduction to Algebraic Ideas

This app moves players from a simple one step equation to a system of four interrelated equations through a series of mathematical puzzles. The math equations are represented with balance scales, weights, and little creatures called zogs. The object is to find the weight of each zog. The designer does a great job of making the difficult task of solving algebraic equations very visual and intuitive. There are three operations the player can use to solve each puzzle. You can multiply or divide the zogs (scaling equations), add or subtract zogs (combining equations), and remove any zog whose value is known (simplifying equations). I would recommend this for any student but particularly for those who would benefit from a highly visual approach to mathematical problem solving. Super!

It's not user friendly - very hard to figure out how to solve the problem from a navigation standpoint, and the help doesn't really help you get going.

This application has a variety of features that would be helpful to a student beginning to learn the ideas of algebra and balancing equations. It introduces students to the idea that something other than a number can represent a number (ex: the Zogs represent different weights/numbers that must be balances). While there are benefits, the lack of instructions and direction in how to complete the activities inhibits the usefullness of this application. It was difficult to determine how to play this game due to the fact there were no instructions and there were multiple buttons that needed to be pressed inorder to be successful. With a clearer tutorial, this game has great potential. Lastly, a student is able to pass a level by merely guessing their way to the right answer. Potentially having a specific number of guesses would help alleviate this potential pitfall. All in all, this is an application that has great potential with a ffew minor modifications.
