Editions fail to load even after they’re “downloaded” onto device. App is essentially unchanged since its inception. Support is unhelpful and just ignored once they realize they can’t do anything since the actual app is garbage. Don’t waste your money, buy the physical magazine or buy Fango instead.
First I should make it clear that I love (LOVE) Rue Morgue magazine, the content and quality of writing is consistently top notch and the design is impeccable (a rarity in the genre and all the more remarkable for it). I've been eagerly awaiting this app for a couple of months, and the results are disappointing. It's tragic to see the promise of magazine publishing on the iPad fail due to shoddy implementation, much as 3D was once hailed as the savior of the film industry only to wither under an onslaught of retro-fitted cash-ins. I thought that Zinio's lazy port of their desktop app was the low point of this particular genre, but I'm sorry to say that my favorite magazine has sunk even lower. This is basically a PDF (which is something we've wearily grown used to), made worse by the inclusion of blue and red outlines added over the top of ad art and hot links. The reduced size means that reading at full page view is a challenge, but the enlarged view lags as it adjusts resolution and a side swipe is more likely to take you to the next page than the next column. Even glossing over the fact that second issue accepted payment but refuses to download, this has to be classed as a huge missed opportunity and we can only hope that Adobe's recent announcement of their digital magazine tools (which should put more control in the hands of any publisher willing to fork out the $700 monthly subscription fee) will allow for more device-appropriate re-purposing, a consequent increase in readership and the ability to monetize that content.
I love the ideas like being able to access media through the pages, but I have two complaints: 1) the price is too high. I know it's probably worth that, but since I also buy the hard copy, it's hard to spend the extra money. Perhaps even $4.99 would be more reasonable. 2) the issues come out pretty late. I'd be a lot more tempted to buy them if the new issues came out before the hard copies. 3) the load times when enlarging a page are a little long.
I am a huge fan of Rue Morgue magazine and was thrilled to see an app allowing me to purchase digital issues. At first I loved this app, but I have had some recent issues that have made me very angry. Just today I bought the two latest issues at $6.99 each and also queued the other four issues I had previously purchased for updates the app said were available. The first issue downloaded with no problem but then everything stopped and the second issue, as well as all of the updates refused to download. I tried restarting the app, my iPad and even refreshing my wifi connection with no success. Finally I uninstalled the app altogether and reinstalled it. Upon reinstalling it I found that even while signed into the yudu account you are required to have in order to purchase RM issues, I had no option to recover the issues I had already paid for. Essentially my only option is to repurchase every issue I have already paid for or to write this review warning others not to wast their money on this garbage app. I plan to delete the app and think twice before giving anymore money to Rue Morgue magazine. Avoid this waste of money at all costs!
Very disappointed Issues just stop downloading short after they start. Maybe after they fix this.
The problems people are identifying are old and have all been corrected. This is an amazing app of an amazing magazine. The amount of additional content that is available by the click of a button is amazing - links to You -Tube videos, web sites, etc. this is the future of the magazine industry!
Now that Rue Morgue is part of the news stand, gone are the issues that plagued the older app. The pinching and zooming are now more responsive. I can finally give this great magazine the five stars it deserves.
Well, everything was going fine. Now all of a sudden , The latest issue ,march, is not coming up on the available issue page to purchase and download. Tried to contact app support, no website found. I was going to subscribe in the future. No way now. Too big of a risk for 49.99. Ruemorgue , please respond and fix this. great mag and I want it back!
The app is very cool - I like that it is an exact copy of the paper version with links to video clips and sounds (Audiodrome is much cooler this way) There is no restore purchases function, but the app does let you download again for free.
Well, I was having the no load in issue. Very annoying. I emailed the magazine itself and actually got a personal response. Concerned for the trouble I was having ( which, by the way, it seems I'm not anymore ) and asking for details to help fix. Hope it's all good now, but in any case great service from these guys. If the app keeps sucking I will just buy the paper copy!
