Roots are a real key to understanding the meaning of new words you come across in your reading.
Enjoy this list, together with the discovery of new words and the secret code behind much of the English language.
Many words are made up of a root or base word
For example,
the root word port means to carry or to bear.
Attach the prefix ex, meaning out or out of, and you have the word export, to carry out.
Attach the prefix im, meaning in or into and you have import, to carry in. Attach the prefix trans, meaning across, and you have transport, meaning to carry across.
Now let's attach the suffix able, meaning able to be, and you have importable, exportable, and transportable.
By learning the common roots and prefixes (and a few suffixes) you will be able to discern the meaning of many new words almost immediately.
This is for ESL students. Good. Americans above high school who need this are probably functionally illiterate.
I found this to be so compulsively addicting that I had to finish all levels at the first sitting. Imagine my disappointment to discover I wasn't being timed, nor did I earn any score at the end :( I rocked it! And learned a few things, too. GREAT way to have fun and learn! Kinda geeky in a good way!
This app provides some independent (or guided) practice for students who are working on vocabulary and/or morphological skills. I liked that it doesn't look too "young" for my middle school and high school students. One thing to note, if you are using it with more than one student you will need to reset the app to begin at the first level with a new student.
Given the fact that i'm not a native english speaker, i learned with this app many new things.
Worth the time ! As the name suggest it plays around the root of the words Good app to learn vocabulary.
