Really Master of Magic

Keithustus

It's been many, many years and we've seen many poor attempts by big and small developers but we now finally have a modern imagining of MicroProse's 1994 Master of Magic! Tons of spells, tons of races and planes....if you want a fantasy/magical version of Civilization this is what you've been waiting for! You may be put off by the price and IAP. Don't be; this is a regular full-sized PC game that released early on mobile. On PC it's going to be $40 or so, so $13 for entry here and up to $20 for all the "extras" puts in on par with a desktop 4X experience.

This is what iOS has needed

I've been waiting for an age of wonders port to no avail for some time now. That will probably never happen, but planar conquest is close enough. Great game if you like the procedurally generated fantasy 4x. I absolutely recommend it and hope others choose to buy as well so that we can support this model of mobile gaming over the free except for massive iap model. This is a huge and deep game that's well worth the money. My only gripe with this game is that the zoomed in combat needs a lot of improvement in terms of the influence of positioning and terrain/topography. You should not always fight on a flat battle field and be able to shoot through terrain and other troops with no penalty/chance of friendly or wrong unfriendly fire. This makes combat bland and makes protecting the weaker spell casting heroes/troops almost impossible as well as making missile troops overpowered. Please add changes in altitude, advantageous cover/buildings and the chance to hit troops you are firing through. Along the same lines it would be wonderful if you made the field a bit bigger thus allowing full sieges (maybe from multiple adjacent hexes instead of just the aggressor and defender) and more diverse strategies and outcomes in combat.

Enjoying the game so far

Sorry for my previous negative review. Did not understand game mechanics. Gave it another try and seems ok so far.

Fantasy 4X on iPad/iPhone… finally done right

MintDragon

Planar Conquest is a turn-based 4X that puts you in the role of a Sorcerer, who is in command of a city on one of the planets (planes) in the galaxy. Explore, expand by building tech, new buildings, increasing your population and armies, starting new cities, hiring heroes, and researching spells and magic. Conquer various resources and wonders on your home world, crush or befriend other Sorcerers. Become strong enough to force all other Sorcerers to be under your command, or just wipe everyone out. 1. The game options are what make this 4X so rich and special. Each game is procedurally generated, up to 7 planets (planes) can be included, several options can be independently set for each planet. You also choose your Sorcerers characteristics, what schools of magic he/she subscribes to, and starting spells. Next, choose the ‘race’ of people who are following you at the start of the game, such as Orcs, Elves, Humans, or one of the other 5 races. Adjustable game speed, resource availability, difficulty, etc… Basically the game is so deep, that anyone interested in this genre will never play the same game twice. Ever. 2. Plays great on iPad and iPhone, although games cannot continued on your other device. Multi-player is not currently available, but async multi-player is in their plans. The game maps and battle grounds are 3D, zoom and rotate are used appropriately, everything seems optimized for a touch interface. 3. Yes, the pricing is high (vs. other iDevice games), but definitely worth it given it’s quality and depth. The initial price gives you 3 planes, 4 races. The $19.99 COMPLETE PACK unlocks the rest. No IAP paywalls or other micro-transaction non-sense. 4. An active player community (with developer interactions daily) already has game strategy guides, walkthroughs for race/Sorcerer combinations, and a mechanism for submitting improvement requests and bugs. A 150+ page manual is also integrated into the app, and can be downloaded to your iBooks or printed. Come visit the forums on toucharcade to get answers, help, or just learn more about how to play. 5. A game this complex certainly has a few bugs, but non are deal breakers for me; with an active player community working with the developer, 5-6 versions with balance improvements and bug fixes have already been released since launch (check the version history). The game is quite mature for it’s age. Developers are VERY responsive to bug submittals/improvement ideas through their forum. SUMMARY: Great, deep gameplay to satisfy anyone with a love for 4X games, unlimited game choices, procedural generation, epic battles, world building, transporting to multiple planes, and did I mention firing fireballs or lightning strikes? How about conjuring up an giant dragon to lay waste to your enemies army? Well, I’m going to fire up the game again and do just that. Buy this game, it really is that good.

Technical problems

Beremmgg

Good and deep strategy game. Surprisingly rich for an iOS game. However, I have experienced a problem in all my games with loading saved games that makes impossible to continue the game. It always freezes when I get to the second plane. Very frustrating! Please fix that for a 5 stars review.

Great game, but a bit buggy

weedragn1

I love this game, turn based strategy means I can start and stop without much impact on game play, and auto saves are frequent enough that I don't need to be anal about saving the game to not lose progress if I start and stop frequently. The game does get buggy sometimes, normally I save and restart with no problems. It seems like the save files on longer games get corrupted and fail to load, which makes ending the game impossible. I am trying to get some achievements that require large maps and long games, but those games have been impossible to finish. I haven't given up hope yet, but it would be nice to have the bugs fixed. If you manage to get more than 6 Heroes, you can only access 6 of them which can be irritating.

Great, but loses a star for not enough tutorial

Oabrown

This is a full-fledged PC game on mobile, so don't scoff at the price. Unfortunately the learning curve is steep, and though it has a very basic tutorial and help windows for every screen, it could benefit greatly from a much longer tutorial so that we can learn the systems in practice. Nowhere does it tell you what gear is for or how to use it, for example. Only how to make it. I am sure this game is outstanding, but I am just not drawn in enough to learn by trial and error.

wonderful ode to Masters of Magic

victusfate

Great game, wish some of the random locations were more accessible early game. Feels like hunkering down in just a handful of early cities is best and researching hero/champion summoning

Worth the money and more!

Sarazeen

I can't believe this game isn't more popular! It's one of the few truly console-quality games on iOS. Give it a try, trust me. Yes, it's a little pricey (especially if you factor in the highly-recommended COMPLETE PACK IAP), but it's worth it. I paid full price for the game itself and then the Pack, and I have no regrets. Great graphics, gameplay, incredibly replayable and overall very, very enjoyable. The rules are a little hard to get used to (I suggest you download the Manual, the app's starting screen has a link to it) but the work is worth it. If you're debating whether to get this or not, I suggest you STOP and BUY right now!

Fullest 4X on iOS.

Death Bear

It is definitely polished now after the latest update. It fixed most bugs. It plays like most 4X games except replaced tech tree with magic. It is fun to buff heroes. I bought the complete IAP and Definitely worth what I paid.
