You need a 5s. I now have an app I can't update and a notification that I can't get rid of

Same problem as reviewers above: stuck at the "please insert your device into your Cardboard and put on your headphones". Tried rebooting phone and deleting/reinstalling the nytvr app but still no go.
Won't work on an iPhone 5.

The app shows up in my Updates list but gives me an error when I try to update: it's not compatible with my phone.

I installed this on my iPod touch 5th gen when I first received NYT-VR in the mail and enjoyed it. Now, it asks me to update it from the App Store, upon doing so I am given an error that it won't work on my iPod. If the update won't work on my iPod why is it asking me to update?
