On the hard mode of the "special" version of the game there no guarantee that one will be capable of winning. The winning patterns are: 1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 1-2-3, 1-4-5, and 2-4-6. If the player crosses out a match that leads to one of those patterns or a combination of these pattern he or she wins. However, the boards are often generated so that it is impossible to get that pattern and/or possible for the computer to get one of the winning patterns no matter what move the 1st player makes. In order to fix this the board generation would have to be fixed.
