I have been subscribing for 3 years now and it is such a fantastic magazine. It is fun, informative, educational, and just all-around the best. Now the app will make it easier to play through the games. I'm so excited about this app and look forward to many more years of this magazine. Top notch!

I'm in heaven ... Thank you NIC!! My only quibble is the layout of the play-thru screen could be better done.

First, let's be clear: New In Chess is the best chess magazine out there for the seriously player or fan, and this production is the best effort at producing a chess magazine by anyone I've seen, yet. The interface makes it easy to follow the text of the annotations as well as the game position, at least on the iPad. It makes wise use of the available screen, and (quite importantly, for me) doesn't dictate the position you have to view it from, allowing you to hold the device in either position, portrait or landscape. The typography is readable, almost everything about it is as good or better than the rest of the electronic chess pubs out there. Almost everything? Yes. They persist in the unfortunate belief that taking a picture of a printed page is a satisfactory means of electronically publishing a story. This, in Tony Miles' famous words, is "utter crap." Luckily their printed magazine believes in narrow columns, for the most part, so there's little horizontal scrolling needed after you zoom the story text to readable size. That is all that saves this from a much harsher review. Excellent magazine, above average presentation.

The great thing about this New in Chess magazine app is that you can open the games to play through right inside the magazine... you no longer need to have a chess board in front of you to work out the moves in the articles!!! (even though I still like doing that sometimes, this is good when you are on the go and can't pop open a chess board, very convenient) I would take a half star off for the price of the mag, but it has the type of articles I'm interested in, much better than USCF's Chess Life in my opinion!

Everything works beautifully in this app: Smooth reliable operation & crisp response. Just tap on any diagram or move, and it shows you the position, AND lets you step through the moves -- backwards or forwards -- from there. I have four other reader apps on my iPad, and they all frustrate me in some way. This app, however, gets its exactly right. bravo!

Great to be able to read and play through the games without a board.

I have been meaning to buy a copy for a while and am not disappointed. Excellent selection of annotated games. I also might add a very well designed magazine.
Terrible Chess Player
Seems to freeze a lot and the menu disappears sometimes. I don't understand why the magazine is so expensive and this app is so mediocre. :(
