Neoclassical Chess: The Suite

Neoclassical Chess is a chess application for players of all levels, from learning beginner to dedicated amateur to players of the highest competitive levels. It opens the door to an exciting “new classical” chess.

In Neoclassical Chess all rules are exactly as in classical chess, except that play starts after three full moves (in the recommended Standard version) from White and Black, those of a game taken at random from a large, carefully selected database of recent chess master games. As a consequence, openings appear in proportion to their frequency in master practice, providing a single worldwide standard for play. The app provides the initial position and the moves leading to it just before the start of play.

In “The Suite” app, besides the Standard version, three additional, exciting non-standard variants of Neoclassical chess are provided.

In the two Black variants of Nc Chess, Black starts play (i.e. chooses initially) compensating partially White’s “initial move” included in the position. Play starts either after three-and-a-half moves in the preferred Nc Black 3.5 variant, i.e. after the fourth White move, or after two-and-a-half moves in the Nc Black 2.5 variant. Also, the Nc Training variant is provided where play starts (by White) after 5 full moves, which is specially interesting for non-competitive, purely fun play, and for advanced beginners, as it disincentivizes play based on a narrow preparation of opening traps and tricks and promotes both classical and neoclassical chess advancement.

The rest is similar to the Standard version.

Neoclassical chess is the domain of OTB (Over the Board) play, of live chess performance and creative play. It is also the only chess variant ever invented that fully respects the history of the game. That is why we say it is more than a variant: it is an “evolution” of chess, but it’s above all chess.
