WHAT THE EXPERTS ARE SAYING
- 12 BEST Children's Educational Apps of 2012: “Native Numbers is a fabulous app, promoting deeper learning and providing a much needed foundation in math for all children.” - TeachersWithApps.com
- “The kids loved the gameplay feel of the app… This is a great app to help young kids learn the concept of numbers and basic math skills.” -iHeartThisApp.com
- "A Math App Worth Bragging About!" - Karen Mahon, Ed. D, Learning Scientist

OVERVIEW

- Number Sense is widely cited as the most critical math skill a child ever learns
- Native Numbers is the first and only comprehensive Number Sense curriculum in the App Store

Inspired by research, designed by Harvard Education School graduate Dr. Michael W. Connell, and developed by a team of MIT engineers, Native Numbers is the first of its kind - a complete curriculum to help early learners develop Number Sense.

THE PROBLEM

There are countless "early math apps" available in the App Store - but are any of these effective in laying down a proper Number Sense foundation?

THE REALITY

Unfortunately, most math app developers ignore the complex sequence of activities required to properly develop Number Sense. Instead, some claim to develop math knowledge as a side effect of other, non-mathematical games and activities. Others inflate a single, narrow math concept into a game that they promise will provide "hours of fun and learning."

This random approach to early math simply does not work. Researchers Douglas Clements and Julie Sarama found, for example, that while it might appear that kids are "doing mathematics" when engaged with puzzles, blocks, songs, and the like, "evidence suggests that such an approach is ineffective, owing to a lack of explicit attention to mathematical concepts and procedures along with a lack of intentionality to engage in mathematical practices" (Science Magazine, Aug 2011).

THE SOLUTION

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Common Core State Standards have made Number Sense a focus area of elementary mathematics education for all children.

Native Numbers is based on high-quality learning research and is designed to engage each child directly in an individualized, intrinsically rewarding learning experience while minimizing distractions – what some people call "hard fun.”

(For a brief video that explains why Number Sense is so important and how Native Numbers develops it, search for "Native Numbers" on YouTube.)

Native Numbers challenges children with 25 engaging and carefully sequenced activities that develop an understanding of several core concepts and skills, including:

- Number Representations: Identify the numbers 1-9 as continuous quantities (rods), discrete quantities (sets of animals), and symbols (numerals)
- Number Relations: Answer questions about number relationships using a variety of visual representations and vocabulary (greater/less, bigger/smaller, heavier/lighter, etc.)
- Ordering: Arrange numbers in order from small to big and big to small
- Counting: Use numbers to put a set of objects in order (ordinal numbers) and to determine how many objects are in a set (cardinal numbers)
- Demonstrate Mastery: Apply concepts from previous activities to novel, untrained examples

Recommended Ages: 4-7 (home or school) although many younger and older children can benefit as well

Love it, BUT!
Jktczh

I love the app, the number sense imbued in the levels is fantastic. I love how mastering one level unlocks the next, very motivating. One big problem - the trophies. As soon as my child realized the meaning of the different colors he was no longer interested in learning the numbers but instead was working only for the gold trophy. And the first time he didn’t get one he was in tears and no longer interested in the app at all. This is a textbook example of being “punished by rewards”. Please include the option of turning off the trophies and stars. Progress bar and accuracy/speed markers are fine as objective feedback, but the “ranking” and reward associated with the trophies are detrimental to the learning and ultimately made this wonderful app unusable for us. Developers, please read Alvie Kohn’s “Punished by rewards”and continue with your fabulous work! Thank you!

Phenomenal app to accelerate understanding of math

Incredible - changes how you think about learning. Gone are simple number with word associations and in its place are visual and spatial associations which increases an individual’s understanding of math exponentially.

My 5-year old will play this for an hour
Partyzip

My daughter is 5 and in kindergarten. She loves this game and I am astonished at how long she will sit quietly playing it. It's definitely helped her math skills, and she is truly excited to learn.

Speaking as a teacher and a parent, I love this app!!!!
Kinder teacher TX

As a teacher I love integrating technology into my curriculum. I have been using this app with my kindergarten students! It's fun and educational. I love using the dashboard so I can see what is happening while my students work on the IPAD. It also helps me with keeping documentation on my struggling students :) I can print out the dashboard for my records to show my student's progress! I would recommend this app for teachers!!!!! You can add all of your students on the instructor dashboard and monitor their progress !!!! Great feature for teachers!!! Parents you will love this app too!

Best math app available
ArlingtonMom!

Best 10 bucks I ever spent. Seriously. This app is not math "junk food" like many of the other ones I have tried. This thing is the real deal. This is by far the best math app out there, and it may be the best one period (are there awards for these things?) My 4 year old went from zero understanding of math concepts to a math whiz, all through the use of this app. I pride myself on the fact that I do my homework on these apps, and this one has both solid learning concepts behind it, plus my daughter LOVES it. She wants to play this above all other games, and the reults are amazing. She demonstrated her math at her preschool, and the teacher wanted to know what the app was so that she could recommend it to all the other parents. Its nice to know that I can leave this in her hands while i do something else (like drive or make dinner) and she will continue to learn. There is even a board that you can use to check to see how your child is doing. The website has a lot of information about the concepts behind this app, and reviews. If you want to make sure that your kid can get ahead in math, then use this app.

Great Math App for Kids
BelmontDad

I typically do not spend any $$$ on apps, let alone $10, but this app is worth it. I have three kids (ages 2, 4 & 6) and they all enjoy playing Native Numbers. I was skeptical that they would play it more than once (I've got a ton of non-educational apps competing for their attention), but there is something innately engaging about the app that seems to draw them in despite the absence of grunting pigs, cars, trains, swords, fruit, or any other familiar game image/icon. All three of my kids have benefitted from the app, but I have noticed the biggest impact on my 2-year old who now understands what quantity each number represents, and relationships between numbers. I would definitely recommend Native Numbers to any parent of young children and hope Native Brain develops an addition/subtraction/etc. app as a follow-up.

As a Dad, I am thrilled
The dad who was a teacher

I was a teacher for years, and as a teacher I would have loved this app. Now as a Dad, I love watching my daughter learn fundamental math skills. This amazingly done. I love this app.

Brilliant!
wiiteacher

That's what I tell my kinder students as they progress through the levels of Native Numbers and it's what I want to tell the developers of this app. It is the BEST math app that I have purchased (and I have a TON of apps). Worth every penny and then some. HIGHLY recommend this app if your child or children in your class are struggling to master number sense. My kids have transferred what they have learned exploring with real Cuisenaire© rods to the app and vice versa. Thank you for this well designed app. Keep bringing us apps like this, NativeBrain!

Great sequential learning for numbers
JackieBryla

I just downloaded this app and it is awesome. Learning numbers and one to one correspondence through visuals. Kids like this and adults will enjoy watching the kids make connections and learn number sense by using the Native Numbers apps.

Wonderful to develop number sense
Teacher 2nd grade

As a second grade teacher, I would only use this app with students who have very underdeveloped number sense. However, for younger students this is exactly what is needed to really develop an understanding of numbers. Well done!
