Name That Note is a note spelling quiz for all ages. Whether you’re a novice at reading music or a virtuoso this app offers a challenge at any level.

Similarly to how we learn to recognise the individual letters of the alphabet, Name That Note can help you learn the note names on a staff (stave).

Select from treble, bass or both clefs.

There are three levels difficulty:-

1. Beginner Level - Answer 10 questions with 6 seconds allowed per question. Note positions are restricted to 1 ledger line above and below the staff. There are no accidentals or key signatures.

2. Intermediate Level - Answer 20 questions with 3 seconds allowed per question. Note positions are restricted to 2 ledger lines above and below the staff. Accidentals are introduced but without key signatures.

3. Advanced Level - Answer 30 questions with 2 seconds allowed per question. Note positions can extend as far as 4 ledger spaces either side of the staff. Key signatures are introduced to really test your note reading skills!

Fluent note reading requires a certain amount of memorising positions on a staff, recognising accidentals and knowing key signatures.
Name That Note uses a ‘flash card style’ way of displaying the question along with four answers, one correct and three incorrect, to choose from.
Just like a multiple choice question only one answer is the correct one.
After an answer is selected, or the time limit for that question runs out, the correct answer is displayed briefly before going to the next question.
Once there are no more questions a total score is given.

Now you can turn the timer off to enable 'practice mode'. This great feature allows you to simply take your time when you're learning. And if you feel like more of a challenge you can enable 'continuous mode'.

When in both continuous mode and practice mode the questions never end and a percentage of correctness is displayed. However when the timer is turned on and continuous mode is enabled, the game will go on indefinitely until an incorrect answer is given. When this occurs a score is given for the total number of questions answered consecutively.

The notes are in wrong areas

Is it just me, or do some of the time signatures in advanced mode not exist?

I play this game nearly everyday and I’ve memorized a lot of playing piano or reading music. I’ve memorized key notes on keyboard and to read all of middle c notes. I’ll be practicing the bass notes when I feel ready. However, I love this practice game because it makes it fun to memorize reading music.

Awesome app

Really helped with my kids who had a hard time memorizing the notes.

GREAT APP!

This is a MUST if you want to learn the other clef, or if you are new to music! I've played French Horn, Mellophone, and trumpet since 6th grade, but I've become interested in learning Trombone. I know the treble clef, but I don't know the bass clef. I've been using this application for ONLY 5 MINUTES, and I'm already starting to memorize the bass notes! I'll be playing jazz on Trombone in no time thanks to you! Thanks a ton! ~Zeke

Exactly what I was looking for!

I'm returning to the clarinet after a 25 year hiatus, and although my playing technique is surprisingly un-bad, and I have a reasonably good understanding of the rhythm/timing of the various notes, my recognition of notes on the staff is awful. The basic and simple "flashcard" style of this app is just what I was hoping to find. My only criticism was that notes would often repeat several times during each "quiz", sometimes one right after another. But the developer took care of that with an update!

Great app!

I like it! I would have rated 5 stars if not for the following glitches. On the advanced level, the first question gives about 1 sec. to answer whereas the following questions give more time. Also, it would be great to keep track of the scores to rate one's progress. I'm already thinking of ways to integrate this app. into my students lessons.

Great little trainer.

Wouldn't mind an even easier level for noobs, but this app is good.

Good app

The only reason I gave 4 stars is because you can't turn off the timer. I don't like that it is sort of a "game" where you have to "win" before the time expires. It would be nice to have time to think if I need to and then give the right answer. It would also be nice if it had piano keys to pick the notes from. Other than that it is what I was looking for.

Great for my students

I use this for my students to help with note recognition. They love it. I agree about needing a way to track their progress. That is the only reason I gave it a four. Would have given it a 4 1/2 if I could.
