Gotta give a little more to play with before asking for payment; cool scanning pod though, but a no-go

Such a useful health tool

The mPort pod just showed up at the LA Fitness near me fairly recently, and I think I was intrigued and scared of it like most people. Just the idea of getting mostly naked in this box in the middle of the gym while it scanned my body seemed frightening. But I've been really trying to get into a workout routine and wanted to accurately track my progress (and avoid self-indulgent progress selfies), so I gave the mPort a shot and it was fantastic! The mPort itself plays really calming music and a lovely Australian voice guides you through the simple process of getting scanned, and then the beautifully designed app shows you your info. If you're on a free account, you'll get your weight, height, BMI, and a couple other things that are really useful. But when I paid for the app, the additional measurements were so useful in tracking my progress. The 3-D avatar especially is amazing (though maybe a little discouraging when you're still starting out) and overall this app and service has been wonderful!

Total scam!

Usually, when there's a paid app, developers either offer a trial for some time (normally 30 days) with no limitations and then prompt you to make a purchase, or they provide a lite version that people can use but with limited functionality. I've never seen an app that does both: they promise 30 day trial but when you download the app they don't show you anything but your weight and height. You can't do ANYTHING AT ALL until you purchase the premium version. To me it's a scam, how is it a trial then if I can't do ANYTHING!! They don't even show your 3D image that you saw in the booth, none of your measurements. Scam and lies!! It doesn't even make sense, you want people to like your app enough to purchase it, why the hell would I spend a penny of my money if I don't know what the app can do in reality (not in words and promises). I'm capable of tracking my progress without paying to scammers. Don't be stupid, don't enable and encourage dishonest developers like that by buying this app.

Total scam, do not download

They make it seem like if you go to their cube, it will show you all your stats Once you do the cube and they take all your info, they will tell you download the app to get all the stats You download the app and ...... No stats. They tell you to pay them to see the stats. Complete scam. Do not go to their cube and give them your info, and if you've already made that mistake, do not Download this app.

Not a good app

Need improvement. It doesn't calculate stats correctly. Initially it showed my body fat % as 13% , next week it showed 16%.

Pretty Great
@dbh

I headed down to a store that had their box today and got a scan. The whole process was smooth. Only complaint is that the computer takes a long time to work - I suspect they need some servers in the US, closer to these boxes. I signed up for the app, paid for monthly service and got my stats. It's all good. I have no issue with their freenium model. They give next to no info for free - but remember there is a huge custom piece of hardware (their cube) that is required. Their costs are not the same as someone selling a software only solution. I have zero problems forking over a few bucks. I had a dexa scan years ago and it was $150. So I can't really complain for $5. The dexa scan is more accurate, but I think mport is more for relative changes rather than accurate measurements. It's probably close enough for me and most people. Now, my main gripe is with their business model. The closest box is not close to me. I would much rather pay a flat fee each time I go because I don't feel I can take advantage of a monthly service. If it was closer, maybe. But I will most likely use this a few times and cancel it for that reason. I could easily see using this weekly at my gym if it was there. Good work. Hope you guys do well with this.

Free trial is not true

As they require your credit card details for something they offer as “free” I will may sign for this program, now I don’t rely on them.

It’s great, ignore salty reviews

I absolutely love mPort. It’s so convenient for me to get in the pod while I’m at the mall. It’s truly helped me keep motivated as I continue my health journey. At home, it gets a little discouraging when the scale doesn’t go down a lot. But then I get scanned and see that sure, maybe I only lost 3 pounds this month after rigorous training, but I’ve lost 4 inches from my waist and my biceps have grown an inch each! AND I can physically see the changes in my body thanks to the 3D model of me. I also love that it gives a pretty accurate reading of body fat percentage. Honestly, for less than $40 a year, it’s an amazing service. Only downside is that it’s obviously not available everywhere, but it’s so amazing that I had to take the time to write this review. All the complaints are just about people having to put credit card info for a free trial. News flash, most all services require that to avoid abuse, even Netflix! And I read that some people couldn’t see all the stats. Just give it a few minutes after inputting your cc info. Close the app and log back in. It will grant you access to everything as promised by the free trial. And you’re free to cancel it before being charged. I know because my friend didn’t want to keep it and she was able to do it easily. But definitely try it. It’s amazing.

A real review, the good and bad

I’ve been using this for about six months or so. It is a cool concept but it needs a lot of work. Pros: I like that it giving you 3D scans of your body so you can see all your problem areas and the overall shape your body. It shows you measurements of different parts your body ie: waist, biceps, thighs, etc. It takes these measurements plus your weight to give ball park BMI. You can also compare older scans with newer scans to see what has changed about your body with is pretty awesome, less you fell off the wagon and gain 20 pounds. Cons: Not enough pods. Finding a pod to scan in can be difficult. You might have to drive far to get to one. Also, the pods don’t seem to work properly all time. It’s good when it works but if it doesn’t, it’s all bad. It’s about a 50/50 tossup if the pod is working or not. That is a big problem. Sometimes the pods would make these deformed scans of you and everything would thrown out of wack. I is a problem with the lens when this happens. The other times the pods would be out of service waiting to be fixed. I’ve driven multiple pods in a day without getting a successful scan because these issues. Overall, it’s good if it’s working. Would give 2.5 stars if I could, since works about half the time.
