I am overall extremely happy with this app. The layout is very user-friendly and encouraging, and the pacing is nice as it gives you full and rather useful sentences early on. That being said, this is not a course that will get you to be sufficient by any means, and I would use it just as a starting point for people who want to seriously study the language. I already know hiragana and katakana, so I skipped over those lessons, but I don’t think they would take long for people who are starting from scratch. I plan to finish parts 3-6 by the end of the month, and then I will start Genki I and the rest of that series. I have no doubt that the knowledge I gained from this app will help me understand Genki and get through it more quickly. Thanks to the developer of this app! You really hit it out of the park.

There is no substitute for immersion when learning any language. That being said, this app offers excellent supplementary study. Japanese is a complex but elegant language. Yet it can be challenging for westerners for a number of reasons but the fruitful repetition loops, and both Kanji/Kana examples go a long way in orienting the mind to the language in a progressive manor. No matter how much you study with written materials, you will no be able to speak Japanese without constant exposure to native speakers to master a pitch accent - the only real knock on the app is the voice overs are a bit too robotic to really learn pronunciation. However, this is a priceless tool. I have been using it for a year and it has been indispensable for study.

The design is slick, but the review of the Hiragana is not thoughtful. It only tests hiragana from the same group against each other, not vs similar looking hiragana. Also, the review algorithm seems to only pull from a limited number of hiragana, not from all of them. Waste of money.

I had been trying to learn for a week and came across this app. It's amazing. I have been using it so much. I do keep running into a problem where the app will crash whenever I review multiple classes. I can still do single classes. Also, some of the voice clips revert back to single vowels on the hiragana. Looking forward to a patch!

This app is really helpful. Used in conjunction with grammar textbooks, it serves as a fantastic tool to reinforce Japanese so that you can make sure the things you learn stick! I love the way that they present Kanji. IMO the method they use is one of the best in helping you recognize common Kanji characters like those you might see on a level 5 exam. Good luck with your studies everyone!

Love the app but you just broke it with last update, crashes every time now. Go back!?

Good app for remembering hiragana, katakana, and some kanji. Also helpful for remembering sentence structure and order. Not great on its own, but it’s best to be used as a supplement along with other forms of learning. Current update has a new round of wrong pronunciations. App also crashes for me now when tapping review past due. Feedback form is only accessible while doing a lesson, but the feedback submit button is disabled.

I am loving this app. And I basically never write positive app reviews. Only 1 bug I see consistently and it's minor; in the lessons, some of them will always say review is past due, no matter how many times you do them just seconds ago. Minor. If you remember you've done it, you can just keep moving forward. That's the only reason for the 4 stars though
