THE prime RTS for iOS gamers!

Cmdr_Shaffer

This is my first app review, ever, but I felt it was worth it for the epicness provided by LASW. Where do I start? For a buck it will easily become your favorite iOS app if you have even a passing interest in RTS games. The gameplay is excellent, reminiscent of Supreme Commander, the terrain is beautiful, the procedurally generated maps are a plus, and the unit choice is nothing to sniff at. Also, the dev, or at least the person on the other end of isotope's email help line said that Machines at War 3 will be coming soon to iOS devices as well, and that it will have multiplayer. That does, unfortunately, lead me into the part of the app that I don't quite like so much. No app is perfect, and LASW is no exception, despite how pretty it is. I would say no multiplayer support is my biggest gripe. Especially since after a while the bots become easy to beat unless you start giving them bonuses. But, MaW 3 is coming, and like I said above, that is supposed to have multiplayer, so I will wait on that and see. Secondly, the terrain is too flat. Everything is pretty, but there are no mountains, hills, valleys, or anything, really. And I can understand how hard something like that is to add, especially when you're going with procedurally generated maps, but it does break realism somewhat. Thirdly, player colors (or lack thereof) is something of a sticking point for me. The interface for choosing payer color, while basing it on world nations gives it sort of a "Monday Night Combat" feel to it, and that's a positive, the interface itself is somewhat hard to discern...perhaps a suggestion would be to highlight each nation with the color you will be if you choose said nation. And then, I think my last negative point would have to be on unit behavior and path finding. Again, two of the most complex parts of an RTS, so I am sympathetic, but a review is to comment on good and bad, so here goes. The path finding needs some work. Units, when clumped, tend to get stuck and then just stall out, unsure of where to go. This is particularly noticeable with land units, if you move them in a group or if they encounter a structure, it's not uncommon to see a dozen or so tanks in that column of twenty you just dispatched sitting around, twiddling their thumbs. Then, secondly, as mentioned by another reviewer, there doesn't really seem to be a whole lot of unit autonomy, forcing a lot of micromanagement. This could be mitigated somewhat by having some kind of intermediate zoom function, without necessitating going clear back to the strategic map to get a view of the battlefield, but as mentioned, it's frustrating to see a gaggle of Newts sitting around some damaged units, not repairing them, or to see a squad of tanks not attacking the power plants, because they don't register high enough on their threat priorities. However, this in no way detracts from the whole of the game. For RTS on a tablet or other portable device, it is simply unparalleled. As a SupCom player, I admit I am somewhat picky when it comes to my RTS's...I like things big, and I like combined arms, and not many RTS's in the PC can boast that, much less on a tablet. Seeing a wing of Raptors come take out that gunship that was harassing your Spec Mine while you send a fleet of destroyers to do the same to your enemy is a thing of beauty. A column of tanks rolling inexorably towards the enemy stronghold is frightening if you're on the receiving end, and absolutely glorious if you sent them yourself. Everything about this game screams awesome, from the way you tech up, to the sheer scale of it all. So in conclusion, LASW is a must have for any strategy gamer, heck, any gamer, period. You will NOT be disappointed. Have I said how awesome it is enough yet? :-P EDIT: As an addendum, I must comment on how amazing the AI is. I didn't think that it was very challenging, but that's because I had yet to fully explore the difficulty levels. In the Robotic level with a bit of a bonus, even as low as 10%, I found that a four-way battle went from taking around an hour to over four hours in length! Attacks and counter attacks were flying all across the map and it was almost impossible to get a steady base established because the AI harassment was absolutely ridiculous. I've said it before and I'll say it again; if you're looking for an RTS to sate your addiction on a tablet or mobile device, LASW is the game for you, and when MaW3 comes out with multiplayer, it will easily become the top game on iOS devices everywhere.

Just like Total Annihilation for PC

Sirhub

I had flashbacks of playing Total Annihilation, the game that Supreme Commander was born from. Controls are pretty good so that playing the game does not end in rage quit. It is actually very fun to play. 1-hour campaigns fly by. The only downside is that there is no campaign mode, only randomized skirmishes. I don't mind, but some people might want some kind of story. Build up the nuke and watch the glow!

This game is awesome!! Some suggestions would be multiplayer and I think in real life nukes leave radiation so each ICBM launched should leave a radiation cloud also where it blew up Another ideah would be a zombie team or Weopon that makes zombie hoards to attack vehicles and possibly infantry

Best defense/ attack game
