Kanjilicious is a rhythm game that will help beginners test their knowledge of Japanese characters—hiragana (ひらがな), katakana (カタカナ)—and now in this release—kanji (漢字). Learning games are a fun, efficient, and ultimately more effective method of memorization.
Features:
• Scoring based on speed, accuracy and streak multipliers.
• Game Center leaderboards for every level in the game.
• Game Center challenges, so you can compete against your friends and rivals.
• Story mode, original illustrations, and a randomized taiko soundtrack.
The hardest part of learning to read Japanese characters, as a child or as an adult, is memorizing the Japanese kanji required for reading. Beginners start in kindergarten with 96 kana characters—the native Japanese syllabary call hiragana and katakana—followed by 80 new Chinese characters—kanji—in the first grade. And that's just the beginning. Students memorize over 1,000 characters before they graduate from elementary school.
Far too many beginners quickly become overwhelmed and give up after the first year. With Kanjilicious you can play yourself into shape, and motivate yourself to keep practicing.
This app is a labor of love. We've been working on this for almost two years and we're still just getting started. This version has hiragana and katakana, and it's fun so far. I think we'll have a new level (or grade) added each month. Look for Grade 1 on June.
Score 45% first try. Need to refresh my High School Japanese. My 6-year old niece loves the cute character.
A great way to stay up on your Japanese that you took in high school or college, OR a perfect way to learn for the first time! Great app.
Well designed and fun. I love the artwork and the music. This app deserves a lot of attention. Can't believe it's free!!
I love those taiko drums. Looking forward to more levels. One idea I had is that you could create levels where the the answers to hiragana were katakana and vice versa. Thanks for the great effort that must have gone into making this.
It's tough to compete with Mindcraft and Asphalt 8 but kids have to do their homework and this game helps hide the homework pill in something sweet. Looking forward to the next update.
This app was in development for 2 years and all we get are 6 sections on kana? Not a single thing about kanji in "kanjilicious?" This is one of the more disappointing crowd funded projects I've ever been a part of.
The name is KANJIlicious. The Kickstarter promised kanji and there are none. It's a kana only game that takes about 20 minutes to go through the whole thing. What a disappointment on an interesting premise.
I was a backer for the Kickstarter, and don't regret it. I have been learning Japanese off and on for a while. I have several apps that I use to learn Hiragana and Katakana and this is one of them. One of my few complaints is that I wish that there was a study sheet. If it wasn't for my previous studies, I would have had a lot of difficulties. You are almost just thrown into the first level, Though I know that they are still working on it.
Lovely animations (albeit a bit slow) Completely free without ads Has a decent amount of characters I've already had N1 so I won't use it but it's worth checking out if you are a beginner or lower-intermediate. Good luck!
