Invasives in Southern Forests

This app is based on the U.S. Forest Service publication: A Field Guide for the Identification of Invasive Plants in Southern Forests. Invasions of nonnative plants into forests of the Southern United States continue to go unchecked and only partially unmonitored. These infestations increasingly erode forest productivity, hindering forest use and management activities, and degrading diversity and wildlife habitat. Often called nonnative, exotic, nonindigenous, alien, or noxious weeds, they occur as trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, ferns, and forbs. This app provides information on accurate identification of the 56 nonnative plants and groups that are currently invading the forests of the 13 Southern States. Recommendations for prevention and control of these species is provided from the booklet, “A Management Guide for Invasive Plants of Southern Forests,” published by the Southern Research Station as a General Technical Report. Basic strategies for managing invasions on a specific site include maintaining forest vigor with minimal disturbance, constant surveillance and treatment of new unwanted arrivals, and finally, rehabilitation following eradication.

Invasive plants of SE forests

Could not get to open after first installation so deleted and installed a second time - each took over 5 minutes. After opening indicated it was "building database for the first time". Stopped it after 20 minutes. Second try let run over an hour and nothing seemed to happen! What's going on?! Cannot rate if it never is ready to use!!

Great useful app

The numerous high quality photos are an excellent aid in identification in the field. The supplementary glossary and plant sketches are also quite useful for those of us without a plant-related college degree. I'd love to see more apps like this!

Does absolutely nothing...

Downloaded, cover page opened, then nothing else worked. Now it just crashes. Only good thing was it didn't cost me anything (there's your one star!)

I Love It!!

Always on the lookout for new plant apps and this is a good one indeed! Good quality and easy to see photos along with plant characteristic and distribution info help make this a good and well completed app. I just wish they would make one for the West to, and add even more weeds to it!

Not good for my region

Half if the species listed for Texas are actually sold in nurseries and good to cultivate here with our crazy weather. It fails to even mention some of the more noxious plants that we fight constantly like bindweed, at least that's what I call it. Plus, after I chose Texas as the region, it would never let me go back to the menu and choose a different place.

This is an excellent comprehensive app. I was a bit surprised however, that Georgia's state flower is on the invasive list along with several old time shrubs. App is well written and researched.

Great app!

Amazing quality and quantity of pictures. Descriptions are right on and in-depth. I was able to find what I was looking for (English Ivy) even though I live in the West Coast.

Great App!!
