*WHY STILL PHOTOS?*

We first thought of making this application with video. But as we played around with it we found that by merging the two mediums we really could create a lightweight application that brought the best of both worlds together. Each move was shot in video, and then we picked the key frames that we felt emphasized the details we wanted to teach. The play button allows you to see the frames in a flip book mode so that the motion and momentum within the moves is not lost.

We've found that using the frame by frame method of instruction allows you to take in moves at the pace you want. You can jump around fast or spend lots of time scrutinizing a particular frame until you get it just right. Video forces you into the pace the instructor takes. We allow you to take your phone onto the mat and work the details.

Our goal with this app is to offer information in a seminar type format. Many books and videos try to give an overview of the art, starting with the basics and offering techniques from every position. With this application, we are trying to simulate the information you would receive in a seminar. We are planning on bringing in other black belts and professional fighters to do an “online seminar” and show some of their favorite techniques. Please leave us feedback if there are things you like and things you think we could do better. Good training!

Wow!

I was very skeptical when I first saw this. I thought that the still shots would not be as good as video. I was wrong! This is a great format. I like the way you can watch the techniques, then bring the text up and go over each movement. Very well designed!

Well Designed

Very cool app. I have been training for a little over a year and I have been looking at BJJ/MMA apps and picked this up since it was free. I really like the interface. It is easy to use as a tool to study Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with. I like having the ability to freeze frames or watch them play through. And as a lefty, I really like the ability to flip the shots to either side with the techniques. The moves in here are well done; good pics and good explanations. The app itself really has a professional feel to it. I am going to pick up the paid app based on what I see here, nice job.

exceeded my expectations

I am a BJJ junkie/nerd and have watched many of the more popular videos by all the usual suspects. for that reason I was doubtful that I would like a tutorial that wasn't pure 24 fps video. but as it turns out, these guys had a brilliant idea because the frame captures cut right to the chase and have as much benefit as video (in a different way -- better for quick review) but with less time wasted. Kudos on the concept. I may buy the paid version. great review companion tool before a roll. the only thing one might lose with this format is micro details--the kind Profs. Sauer/Rickson always emphasize -- but to be fair I haven't seen enough of these vids to determine if they would add a close up interlude of a detail. bottom line: perfect for the portable reminder/notebook.

Pros and cons
King J-Rod

Cons: Needs audio. There is so much detail being left out. I really can't get much usefulness without video. Pros: Very interesting concept. The text details and slideshow effect is done very well. Overall: Average app. I can't get used to the lack of video and audio. But the app design is very slick.

Great!
