As the previous reviewers state- it is not free! The magazines are between 3-9 dollars each! No previews, no discounts. Shame on Apple for letting this be posted like this. Yes the app is free but NOT the magazines.

Free app, yes. But each issue costs between 3-9$ and there's no preview so you have no idea what the new issue is going to be like. Show me a sample I might buy.

Anyone who gives this app a low rating because they thought they were getting free magazines is dumb. That's it. You. Are. DUMB! Tell me where you go regularly that will GIVE you free magazines? You can't! You have to pay for it, but just like how it's free to walk into a gas station and pick up the magazine from the shelf, it's free to download this app enabling you to get the issues. I would, however, agree that we should be able to preview articles each month, to see if we're into it and willing to make the investment. Also, an interface similar to the men's health app, one of the best iPhone interfaces I've seen, would simplify the reading process so I'm not scrolling up and down and all around trying to read the next column. Give me something more hospitable and ill give you a higher rating!

We can’t get the paper edition here in the states for anything resembling a reasonable cost, and compared to import rates, this ipad edition is a steal! I bought the year-long subscription and read each issue cover to cover. How It Works is the ultimate brain-feed for folks who love to learn about science. It’s extremely well written, and quite diverse in its range of topics. If you like Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, etc.; you’ll probably dig this. Download a "preview" before you buy a subscription if you’re not sure.
