Can You Make It Out Alive? Or Are You Sentenced To Death?

KimMeadow

Beware of checking into this hotel because you might never check out! You receive a letter from your partner, James, who informs you that he is already dead by the time of his letter; and this prompts you to travel to the Holy Mountain Hotel to investigate what has happened to him. During your adventure, you re-live the evil deeds of people who committed crimes and were never convicted. You use a projector to view collected films to gain information as the mystery unravels. Does someone want to seek justice and punish these people for their crimes? The atmosphere was loaded with creepiness, from the scenery, to finding the victim's bodies, and to the haunting moans in the background music. The graphics were crisp and clear, and the artwork was sharp with many shades of blue to add to the ominous mood. This game has a journal! You have your notes to record incidents as well as your thoughts during progression, and your Dossier stores pieces of evidence that tie the mystery together. The inventory is labeled and interactive. You will combine items to create a complete item; and you will initiate some mini-games, such as rotating images to open a diary. The map is quick to teleport and shows that there is a current task, but I found this to be useless since it showed a current task anywhere even though there was nothing to do in some locations. The locations were not labeled as well. Through your map during gameplay, you can view your collected antiques, figurines, and your achievements. There were 30 puzzles throughout, which were fairly easy. One type was to swap parts of lock pieces to open something. Another type was to form numbers by connecting colored wires to the correct shapes. The HOS were nothing special. You had some standard, junk-pile word lists with mild interactivity. Another type was to find silhouette shapes in four individual segments to find four parts to a dragon shape, and then the four parts combine. You are collecting 22 of Esrael's antiques and some character figurines scattered in the locations, and you get a description of each character. The bonus area includes an achievements room and an "alternate ending" game. I am still playing the game so I do not know how long it is, but so far I have not had any major glitches. I am giving this game three stars because other reviewers said that this game is short - a trend which is becoming very prevalent. There has been slow loading between locations when not using the map, but it is for about three seconds only. The HOS were not as unique as ones in other previous games. Overall, this game is fun and interesting enough to play for a reduced price of $2.99.

A very enjoyable game! Shorter than the norm and not quite as challenging but the story was different and interesting. Loved the interactive find-it ending!

Enjoyable fun. Easy to make connections and the paths to solve "obstacles" make perfect sense. Well done!

A Disappointment

Ordinarily, Elephant Games is one of my favorite developers, but "Haunted Hotel: Death Sentence" is just not up to EG's usual fine standards. My biggest complaint is the lack of sensitivity across all parts of the game. Whether using the map to transport or trying to select items in a HOG or scene, it is the rule, rather than the exception, to have to tap multiple times. Several times I've even had to close & reopen the game to be able to pick up an item. With this extremely frustrating glitch, it's not at all worth paying full price.
