The only catch is finding earbuds that work under muffs - otherwise, save some money (despite the kings ransom of $10 in the app world!) I'm cheap, and this is worth the money. You can even listen to music at the same time, if so inclined, by starting this and then toggling the app switcher.

I thought this was a bit dubious but decided to risk $10. Glad I did as it works really well. Just make sure you use decent quality earmuffs on top of your iPhone earbuds and you'll hear your shooting buddies quite clearly, but not the gunshots.

Wasn't sure this was for real but went to the range one day and realized I forgot plugs and remembered reading about this app. I happened to have a pair of Polk Audio "Nue Era" ear buds on me and I use the memory foam ear bud cushions that conveniently work just like like cheap-o squishy shooting ear plugs. I didn't have over-ear defenders which the app author strongly urges you use (and for good reason). Nevertheless I gave it a shot and went from 5.56 to 300 Blackout to 12 gauge and the app performed perfectly as described - everything from the cool breeze to people talking was crystal clear. It's like magic. Disclaimer: YMMV and most certainly will with different ear buds and cushions (thus thisisn't a recommendation), but in my case, without over-ear defenders but using Polk "Nue Era" headphones with the memory foam cushions, it worked out perfectly. Recommendations for the author: 1) Make the app continue to work in the background. While not a show stopper it's definitely a disadvantage. I can't write this review or check a text without the app shutting down. It's an inconvenience. 2) Allow the use of background music, like most gps apps do, so I can listen to music when the app isn't providing active noise cancellation. Not important like the first feature but definitely an advantage to include a feature such as this. 3) include a "hardware compatibility list (HCL)" in the app description and your website. Obviously some ear buds work better than others as do some ear defenders. Disclaim this info if you have to but it would have been helpful to know what you shoot with, for example, or what your users have told you via feedback. In fact, make this feedback part of the app - ie "what defenders and buds are you using?" and even adjust noise cancelation for different buds and defenders in a future release. Great app. Thanks!

Great idea, but suffers from design flaws

This is a great idea for an app. And, it does work pretty well. Is it as good as real electronic hearing protection? No. Is it acceptable... Yes. The issues: 1. The microphone it uses is the one on the headphones designed for use as a telephone mouthpiece. This means you hear a lot of your own breathing, and can't hear anything said to you if you are not facing the person. 2. The standard ear buds don't fit that well inside hearing protection. They kind of annoy you and you will need to fix them every so often. 3. You have a headphone cord dangling the whole time you are shooting. You can put them under your shirt, but then the tug on your ears a bit then you lift your head... Like when you try to get a sight picture in your optic. 4. If you get texts or calls, they break in on you.
Great app but the update is confusing?

The app keeps popping up saying restore purchases etcetera even though I've paid for the instructors version?! What extra am I even paying for? I've used this app a lot, and this update seems to have made me pay twice for essentially nothing extra!!

Bought the app, have had lots go get it as a result of seeing me use it on the range but broken update does not let me restore the purchase I previously made Worried the app's safety is compromised if this simple step was missed in testing.

The app itself works great. I can hear my fellow instructors and students without any problem and the noise cancellation works perfectly. My only issue is with customer support. I paid $9.99 for a lifetime subscription but after an update my subscription disappeared. The only way I can use the app now is to either pay again or use the free trial. Several emails to Essency went unanswered and Apple was no help. I would have rated the app 5 stars but since it no longer works I can only rate it at 1 star at this time.
