Go Snout

Have you ever been hiking and come across a funky looking mushroom? Snout is a tool that can help you figure out what kind of fungus you've chanced upon.

This app was built by a group of four graduate students looking to improve the mushroom identification experience while out hiking or foraging. Even when you're far away from a mobile data network, this app will let you identify the different fungi you come upon.

Mushroom identification can be complex, and this app takes those complexities into account. Typically when attempting to identify a mushroom, you need to know about different features it exhibits, where in the world it was found, and the ecology in which it grows. Snout uses artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies to eliminate obvious mismatches, then allows you to review identifying questions and narrow your fungus down to a particular species.

Note: don't ever eat a mushroom unless you have 100% positive identification. This app is not designed to inform on edibility of any mushroom. If that is your objective, we encourage you to search online forums and groups for people who can help you identify what you've found. This app is instead focused on figuring out what it is you're looking at when you're out in the wilderness, and may even help you learn a thing or two about how to properly identify mushrooms.

This is a work in progress. Please let us know how we've done!

Super Helpful!
Dogtownerz

This app has a nice design and is easy to navigate. It’s super informative and promotes learning about mushrooms. I’m glad they set the right expectation that the app is not to be explicitly followed for eating mushrooms found in the wild. That’s important. With that said, the app is very helpful in identifying mushrooms. Great app.

Great approach to mushroom ID
rasbonics

I really like the approach that this app takes to mushroom identification. It doesn’t claim that it identifies mushrooms correctly every time, and it includes you in the identification process. Mushroom identification is hard, and no AI is good enough to do it without the insight a person brings to the process. The app is simple and well designed. I wish I could save my notes and location so I can come back and find the same mushrooms again. I hope they keep developing the app.

Useful app

This is a cool app to get more familiar with mushrooms. It has a mushroom ID feature that allows you to take a picture of a mushroom you see to help identify it. I’ve had a fun time looking at the different mushrooms and their descriptions, and can’t wait to find more mushrooms in the wild.

Great start, keep going!

Snout is a really cool idea. There is a lot of great content and it can already identify many mushrooms, but there are still a few minor bugs, as well as some genera that are not yet covered. To the developers: great work, and keep it coming! It would also be cool to see it have a social component as the mushroom foraging community is a great one.

Good with common mushrooms disappointing with exotic mushrooms
steppingintonature

Picked up this app because of its good rating on mushroom identification. There are several mushrooms that I have identified which are not in the data base. Or that the app can not recognized. If your looking for an app to identify common looking mushrooms this one rocks but when you get to the more interesting ones it doesn’t even recognize them as a mushroom. Still a good way to learn because it helps you to find a starting point on your identification searches.

Can’t upload a photo you’ve already taken
benttoolip

This app is useless because you can’t upload a photo that’s already in your photo gallery. You have to take the photo with the app, but most of the time when you’re out in the woods there is no connection. All other apps I use allow for a photo you’ve already taken, so I’ll stick with those.

Love the concept!

This app is a great concept and easy to navigate and use. I love the design of it. Currently I’ve noticed some bugs (for example, clicking on a mushroom to read more about it often doesn’t have a button to exit out or return to the previous screen), which make the app a little frustrating to use. I’d love to see more information presented about the mushrooms, or at least links to further reading. Great app so far, minus the minor bugs, keep it up developers!
