Just start the Vocab Mole app and keep it running. The mole will challenge you from time to time during the day with short multiple-choice quizzes. He hides in the hill next to the correct answer. Whack the right hill! Your German will improve as long as you remember to start the app every morning!
Behind the fun facade lies some serious psychological learning theory. The learning algorithm is based on Leitner's famous flashcard system: it maximizes learning efficiency by using spaced repetition.
Forget about boring spreadsheet tables telling you how many words you got right or wrong! Vocab Mole shows your progress in the form of an animated meadow with mole hills. The better you know the words, the further the mole hills move away, until they finally disappear. Clear the meadow of all hills to obtain the mole's helmet and advance to the next level. The mole has five different helmets, each one more difficult to get than the previous one. Whack your way to the coveted purple helmet and your mastery of German vocabulary!
Features:
- Vocabulary of over 7000 words
- German gender for nouns is shown (it is hidden if your iPhone's language setting is set to German, because native German speakers don't need them)
- Uses spaced repetition to maximize learning effectiveness
- You can let the iPod app keep playing while Vocab Mole is running
- You can press the sleep button on your device to save battery; the mole will continue to quiz you from time to time
- The main screen shows your learning progress in the form of an animated meadow with molehills
- The app can also be used as a dictionary: enter a word and get the translation
Thanks to everyone at iBetaTest.com! Your thorough testing and excellent feature suggestions helped make Vocab Mole a lot better.
App was amazing. Then author pushed an 'upgrade' to remove all of the noun genders from my paid app. Now it is useless because who wants to memorize nouns without their genders. Basically, 5 weeks work gone.
The large database and repeated quizzing option make sure you learn all the words if you are determined.
Amazing app. I've increased my vocabulary more in two weeks with this app than I have in 8 years of visiting Germany and studying other programs. Once I have mastered the vocabulary from this app so I have some tools to build sentences I will tackle the grammar and sentence structure again. Having a German husband helps, as he explains subtle differences in meanings when there is more than one German word for an English word. I love this app and hope the creators come up with more language games.
I've been living in Germany since 2004. From my studies, my grammar is fine. However, my vocabulary (Wortschatz) plateaued and I have very little time to focus on learning. With this App, I can learn and review words anywhere - even for a few minutes sitting in the train or waiting for colleagues before a meeting. I especially like how the App shows words that either sound or are spelled similarly. It really forces me to pay attention. The learning algorithm is working for me. I'm noticing that new words that I've learned with this App are showing up in my everyday conversations. Exactly the results I'm looking for. Also, German nouns are presented with gender (m, f, n). I like to say the word in my head or aloud if I can to reinforce learning. As an American living abroad, I highly recommend this App! Thanks and keep up the good work. Cheers from Deutschland :) PS - Perhaps the developer will consider advanced versions/modules that support specific fields such as Business, Law, IT, Medicine, etc.
Gripes: 1. I can't get my IPhone to pronounce German words. English words only. Doesn't help me. 2. Der, die, das would be far more helpful than m, f, n. Seems like a no-brainer.
My dream app. I am at a level where it is hard to improve...other than by some sort of inmersive sutuation in Germany. This app is helping me get off of my plateau...finally!
