Caveat: For musicians only

Jareditor

Five stars because this is a musical instrument of great sophistication and endless potential. I just noticed that Rob Fielding (who developed and literally gave away the mind-boggling Mugician) was involved in this along with Rudess and other geniuses, all folks who spend a lot of time thinking about how to revolutionize music by harnessing the power and features of mobile devices. GS is either for like-minded musicians or other more conventional synth players who want to see what the fuss is about and maybe get on board the music o' the future train. The overall design is truly cheesy and, for just one example of U/I weirdness, the keyboard's display of a bunch of criss-crossing lines, which I think has to do with microtonality features--looks almost alarmingly complicated. Most of us are going to need guidance with this, and in spite of what other reviewers say, there is definitely a decent manual on the app's site, but I can't find a link to it from within the app, which goes along with some of the other almost passive-aggressive nature of the menus and buttons. The site offers some tutorials on how to play the instrument, with very helpful fingerings and scales. These tutorials were made by Rob Fielding, who, based on Mugician and these lessons, is obsessed with playing very fast, as if that were the main point of music. Also, these tuts, plus the very prominently displayed whammy features on the first menu, also can give the impression that GS is primarily a guitar emulator, which it is so clearly not. I've griped a lot, but that's because I would hate for a beginner to be put off from synth apps because they grabbed this one first. I also think Rudess et al should be more forthcoming about the fact that this is not the way to acquaint yourself with music making on the iPad. But, five stars based on the fact that it is a truly amazing, mind-boggling creation that will reward a knowledgeable musician looking to take part in the future of music.

decent but glitcy

spaceyben

While it can be expressive it is also oddly glitchy for an app that costs $10.... my main concerns are how the sounds sometimes drop out completely when controlling other apps or when they are loaded it is horribly noisy until you adjust the volume up or down. Also, there is no smooth transitions between notes and they always sound "stepped". I would love to be able to smoothly glide between chords. I actually wanted this app to use for chord work but it doesn't perform how I had expected it to.

My favorite iPad app

rtaljun

Excellent midi controller. Works well in conjunction with Reason running on my computer or Arctic Keys on the iPad. Doesn't require additional hardware to interface with your computer.

Excellent!

themavric

Absolutely love this app! The fact that I can use it as a midi controller over my wireless network makes it that much better. Very fast, stable and great price.

Doesn't work!

MikhailM

Bought it for my iPad 2 to use with Logic, however it keeps on crashing at startup!

Average

Theradiosun

Ever since I downloaded Animoog, I've had very little need for this app. First of all, the sample sounds are a bit adolescent and the app is nowhere as intuitive as Animoog. I was impressed with the slide feature but again Animoog has it beat. A for effort just the same.

Amazing !!

Best app ever ! !!

Fantastic!

Jordan Rudess and his team have essentially created a new and sensational instrument. It is the best thing I have seen come along in twenty years of experimenting with music stuff. Four years ago I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and haven't been able to play an instrument. The iPad has made things better but Jordan has just piled up icing on the cake! His understanding of how things should work is awesome. If you have a disability and miss your music this is the app for you. I consider all of his apps essential tools for any musician, hobbyist or professional. If you don't have it, get it, get it now!

This app is a miracle

Try it with MIDI!

A Must Own IPad app!

The sounds are fantastic, and the interface BLOWS MY MIND. if you play guitar, BUY THIS APP. The interface is basically like a guitar fretboard, and you can add as many "strings" or "frets" as you like. I have played guitar for 15 years, but am new to synth. Took me about 30 minutes to get used to the interface on this app, and then BAM, shredding this like I do my guitar. Chordwork is easy, the smart octave feature is absolutely BRILLIANT, and the fact that i can midi control my other synth apps on here, such as NLog or Sunrizer, is worth the price alone.
