Great game! Very easy to learn, and very addictive. I just wonder what paying for the game gets you.

Original Design Shines Through Port

Dentorhedge De MU

Geki Yaba Runner was originally a WiiWare title called 2Fast4Gnomz that cost ten dollars. This version has the same whimsical feeling and ability to bring about that "One More Go!" Feeling-- however, despite some positive additions unique to the port, new design decisions make it feel less natural in the end. If you want some whimsy and don't feel frustrated restarting a level upwards of twenty times or a less than perfect interface, then I still recommend this simplistic and addictive bundle of energy, but otherwise it is relatively lackluster. In the end it is free, so why not try it? In short, this is a level-based side-scrolling runner, (like temple run but with a perspective change and no randomness) that uses a drawn art-style. Over the course of the game, you will gain three abilities to have a total of four that must be quickly, precisely and creatively applied while running at top speed. I will not spend time on the quirkiness and imagination that you can find in this initially indie title besides mentioning its existence. For more details, see the full review below: Positive changes include the fact that now, when failing a level repeatedly (upwards of fifty times)you may skip it meaning the simple gameplay only get stale if you let it. Also, a short tutorial section was added at the start of the game, with better tutorialization throughout, meaning getting the hang of your 4 abilities won't feel as rushed. Now, here are the problems: first of all, switching quickly between your abilities will not go smoothly with touch controls and, despite not being a developer myself, I have seen enough genius pieces of work to know it could have done something better than the virtual buttons that it uses now. The precise feeling of using the D-pad is part of what made the original feel great. Beyond that, there are now "castle" levels added at the end of each section that have a noticeable difficulty spike associated with them. You can look at them like bosses and accept them, but after them the difficulty drops back down to the nice gradual slope it was riding previously and only builds back up to what you felt before the castle stages by the end of that section. All of this, the unique elements in castle stages that do not appear elsewhere, and the tonal changes with the music and sprites add up to something that, to me, feels unnatural. At last, I must make mention of the adds in the game. Aside from the usual adds at intervals in the gameplay, when the player has lost all their lives (which the castle stages assure to happen) they have the option to watch an add to continue playing or wait around a half hour. This is a neatly designed system, especially since you have the ability to change how adds work every ten minutes, temporarily removing them after one longer add, or continuing with the charging method familiar in most games. In retrospect, I feel I only have a problem with this system because it is tied directly to your ability to play the game, rather than just making the experience harder, or easier, or more pretty, and because the original was free. Thankfully, there is a daily challenge system, and in app purchases, one of which, incidentally costing ten dollars, removes all ads and leaves the player with unlimited lives. Personally, despite its flaws, I am enough of a fan of the game to make that purchase-- but unless you collect gnome figurines and grow a pointed beard (like myself) I recognize this is not the choice most people will make. In the end it is free, so why not try it?
