When students “subitize” or see numbers as one quantity rather than individual beads, adding and subtracting is much more efficient than one-by-one counting. The game also teaches the learning of fact families and using various combinations to 5, 10 and 20.
All of the text and audio can be toggled between English and Spanish at anytime by the student. The first 2 parts of the game are based on the rekenrek or arithmetic rack, developed by Adrian Treffers at the Freudenthal Institute in Holland.
This is an excellent tool for building internalization of early math concepts. Arithmetic racks are one of my favorite tools, but in my multigrade classroom, it can be difficult to have time to provide all kids with level-appropriate instruction outside of just the adopted curriculum. This app does that for me. I do wish that it simply said levels 1,2 & 3 or easy, medium, hard instead of grade levels though. This would be a great tool for older struggling students were it not for that issue. Also, the Garfield aspect is only the pictures, no voices, animations or anything.
This app is fun and my kids are learning math while they play. The graphics are beautifully designed and it has bilingual options, which is great for many families.
